This Daimler Double Six 6.0 V12 Majestic Long Wheelbase (LWB) is almost too beautiful and well-preserved to be true.
In October 1994, the XJ 40 series was discontinued after eight very successful years of production, and its successor was launched.
Development had already begun in 1973 and was guided by the aim of embracing the conventional Jaguar style: classic proportions, combined with traditional craftsmanship (using materials such as wood, metal and leather). Thanks to its proportions, flat side profile and ‘hip swing’, the XJ40 carried on the traditional design of its predecessors, reinterpreted in a modern way.
Particularly in the field of vehicle electronics, the XJ40 was one of the most technically ambitious cars of the 1980s. The XJ40 was fitted with the AJ6 six-cylinder in-line engine, familiar from the XJ-S, made of light alloy and with a displacement of 3.6 to 4.0 litres displacement, as well as the sensational, exceptionally smooth-running V12 engine, initially with a 5.3-litre capacity and, in the final two years of production, the enlarged 6.0-litre V12, as seen here in this exceptional example.
A new design feature introduced with the XJ40 was the J-Gate automatic gearbox, which was extremely practical to use and unique at the time, featuring a separate lever for manual gear selection. The XJ40 was a major commercial success for Jaguar. No other large Jaguar saloon achieved such high sales figures in a single year as the XJ40 did during the early years of its production.
The crowning glory was the luxury variant, the Daimler Double Six Majestic LWB. Hand-painted and fitted with materials of the very highest quality, just like this particular example.
